Agency has been shown in a variety of ways to have a high impact on learning outcomes and student academic performance. With that said, agency is a very broad abstract concept and its manifestations are difficult to observe. Once we explore what types of agency have been previously defined, we can then see, how agency can be broken down into measurable manifestations. Knowing the extent to which a certain agentic variable has on academic learning success, can facilitate different ways of looking at agentic impacts, on different types of agency. The primary focus of most research into agency is based on individuality. Agency is not in a vacuum, and environmental affordances should be explored to determine its capacity in shaping agency. My initial literature review has identified some key areas for further exploration, including; how we can collect data beyond self reported surveys and questionnaires, how can we look at agency as a collaborative or group-based phenomenon, and to what extent can agency potentially have a negative impact?
